How to Make the Most of PWX 2026

A practical before, during, and after checklist for getting the most out of this year's event

Between the keynotes, the show floor, and the people you actually came to talk to, it’s easy to spend three days at a conference and walk away with a stack of business cards and not much else.

PWX 2026 runs August 30 to September 2 at the George R. Brown Convention Center in Houston, with the exhibit hall open Sunday through Tuesday. Last year’s event in Chicago drew close to 5,000 attendees, so the floor will be busy. A bit of planning ahead of time goes a long way toward making sure you leave with something useful.

Here’s how we’re approaching it.

Before the Show: Know Why You Are Going

1. Name Your Specific Infrastructure Problem

Start by identifying the operational frustrations you are hoping to solve. Is it an aging stormwater system? A utility master plan that no longer reflects what is actually in the ground? Or a specialized labor shortage that is stretching your field teams thin? Walking onto the floor with two clear priorities acts as a filter, making it obvious which sessions and booths deserve your time.

2. Download the App and Sync Your Schedule

The official APWA PWX 2026 mobile app is your main tool for navigating the event. Use it early to build a loose hour-by-hour plan.

  • Cross-reference: Map out your chosen technical sessions against the exhibitor list.
  • Divide your team: If you are attending as a team, do not walk the floor together. Split up to cover more ground, assigning different zones or technology sectors (e.g., asset management software vs. vacuum trucks) to different team members.

3. Start the Conversation on Social Media

During the Show: Execute the Plan, But Stay Flexible

1. Push Past the Surface-Level Pitch

When you stop at a booth, move past the generic marketing presentations. Ask specific, operational questions: How does this equipment interface with our existing workflow? What is the learning curve for field crews? What are the limitations?

Look for live, interactive demonstrations rather than static brochures.

2. Book Follow-Ups on the Spot

Relying on a physical business card or a badge scan to remember a conversation is a gamble. If you have a highly valuable interaction with an exhibitor or a peer, take out your phone and send a quick calendar invite or a LinkedIn connection right there.

Securing a tentative 15-minute slot for the following week ensures the momentum is not lost in the post-conference rush.

3. Plan for the Scale of the Venue

The George R. Brown Convention Center is massive, and public works conferences require miles of walking. Leave blocks of uncommitted time in your schedule! Some of the most valuable ideas exchanged at PWX start unexpectedly in a hallway or over a coffee between formal presentations.

After the Show: Follow Up While the Context is Fresh

1. Deconstruct Your Notes Right After the Event

Yes, you will probably be tired, but your future self will thank you. Set aside a moment during your flight back, or during your first days back in the office to review what you collected. Write down the main takeaways that apply directly to your municipality or business before the details begin to blur.

2. Send Hyper-Specific Follow-Ups

When reaching out to new connections, reference the precise topic you discussed, whether it was a shared frustration with sewer asset scores or a debate on vacuum truck mechanics or inspection tools. A contextual follow-up proves you were listening and lays the foundation for a real professional relationship.
